Medical Tourism and Weight Loss Surgery

When considering going abroad for bariatric surgery, it is always important to consult with your domestic doctor in the states and abroad before making any decisions. One area of discussion should be the type of procedure appropriate for each patient. Lap band and gastric bypass are two of the most common weight loss surgery procedures. While lap band is sometimes described as the less invasive of these two bariatric surgery options, the need to readjust the bands with time makes gastric bypass a potentially advantageous option.

Experience of the Surgeon

While bariatric surgery is generally considered minimally invasive, the experience of the surgeon performing this procedure is a high determinant of the quality of the outcome. It is generally said that a surgeon should perform at least 25 bariatric surgery procedures per year to be considered competent. Obviously the more weight loss surgery procedures one performs the more proficient one becomes. It is preferred that a surgeon performs over 200 of these procedures per year, whether they are lap band or gastric bypass operations. Medical Tourism Solutions is proud to work with surgeons that have significantly surpassed these benchmarks and would be happy to share these statistics with you. Bariatric Surgeons...

Even with lap band and gastric bypass procedures being minimally invasive, it is recommended to stay for up to two weeks in your destination of choice to ensure an adequate recovery before traveling home. Make sure to discuss this with your surgeon of choice and follow any recommendations made by your healthcare providers. Destinations...
